INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT FOR INDEPENDENT BAKERY

A leading UK bakery has called upon the international skills of compliance experts at Lorien Engineering Solutions to complete a multi million pound development.

Cheshire-based family bakery Frank Roberts & Sons has been working with engineers at Lorien for the past two years on an automation project which will secure its position as a cost efficient bread supplier well into the future.

Compliance engineers at Lorien have now been engaged with final stages of the development to extend the existing process and packaging plant, working with the bakery’s international equipment suppliers.

Tony Reynolds, compliance manager at Lorien, has been working with a bread slicing and bagging machinery supplier in Los Angeles as well as a basket conveying system engineering company in Christchurch, New Zealand. As well as assessing the machinery against European Harmonised Standards, Tony modified the guarding and control systems to ensure that the equipment would meet the stringent CE marking legislation.

Tony said: “Neither of the international suppliers had any practical experience of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC as required for CE marking, so Lorien stepped in to ensure that the machinery met with all the relevant EU legislation. By preparing the documentation for the CE Technical File for Frank Roberts & Sons, we can ensure that employees are using safe and approved machinery.

“Business trips to LA and New Zealand may sound glamorous, but I arrived in Christchuch just four weeks after the earthquake struck the city and experienced several significant aftershocks – that certainly adds a different dimension to your working day!”

Lorien has recently been awarded its fifth Order of Distinction from RoSPA recognising its continued commitment to workplace safety.

“Our specialist skills in areas such as CE Marking of production lines and DSEAR/ ATEX assessments are growing in demand, which provide clients with a one-stop shop when it comes to safety best practice during capital investment projects,” Tony concluded.
