Innovative Bakery celebrates record growth

Bells of Lazonby, a family business, established in 1946, has both a Conventional and Dedicated Free-From Bakery, supplying national and international markets.

Bells recognised the growing number of diagnosed Coeliacs back in 2002, well ahead of the market and challenged themselves with creating gluten, wheat and dairy free cakes which were every bit as delicious as the mainstream option. The results have been fantastic with the branded ‘We Love Cake’ range being commended with several Free-From awards. Last year for instance, the ‘We Love Cake’ Cherry Bakewell won the Free-from Foods award for Food Service, being described as the “Perfect replica of non-gf version!”

The free-from bakery avoids 10 of the 14 allergens specified by the Food Information for Consumer Regulation (FIC) legislation, avoiding gluten, wheat and dairy amongst other key allergies. The highest regulatory standards in both of the factories has enabled the firm to establish key partnerships with the majority of the UK’s leading Supermarkets and also the food service industry, working with National Coffee Shop Chains and large Wholesalers to provide both branded and private label offerings.

The Conventional Bakery manufactures many baked goods including cakes, tarts, breads and rolls. The products are made in small batches to best replicate home-cooking with many of the cakes still having the finishing touches made by hand.

Bells has a dedicated staff team with over 25% holding 10 years+ service to the company. The business continues to nurture grass root talent, having invested in Baking and Engineering Apprenticeship courses over the past couple of years. The budding bakers and engineers learn new skills in the classroom and test them out alongside more experienced members of staff back at the factories.

The business continues to thrive, being recently voted 2015 ‘Which Best Buy’ Gluten-free mince pies for their retail We Love Cake Mince Pies! With Bells’ extremely strong double digit growth in recent years, there are immediate plans to expand both factories.
