Imaginative Design, Quality Build September 6, 2011 News A pioneer in the design, manufacture, and installation of unit conveyors, conveyor systems and associated materials handling equipment, Exmac Automation has a combination of experience and expertise covering the majority of industrial applications, and is able to provide cost-effective solutions for projects ranging from conveyor modules to bespoke automated handling systems and extensive customised turnkey systems. With comprehensive in-house capabilities, enabling it to undertake concept and detail design, project management, manufacture, inspection, delivery, installation and commissioning of projects, Exmac has an annual turnover in excess of £16 million and is part of the MacDonald Humfrey group of companies. ISO 9001 accredited and continuously striving to achieve ongoing improvement in the overall quality of its products and service, Exmac has established a reputation for supplying high quality, robust systems at competitive prices. The company’s 70,000 sq ft facility in Worcester has wide-ranging design, manufacturing and assembly resources, whilst its skilled team of customer focused automation professionals offer a broad base of knowledge and experience in a broad variety of industries. Moreover, a large workshop enables the company to carry out comprehensive pre-installation assembly and factory acceptance tests on all projects. One of its numerous successes in recent years was for CHEP, the global leader in pallet pooling, which sub-contracts a number of its UK pallet conditioning facilities to partners such as Unit Pallets Limited (UPL). Working together CHEP and UPL, Exmac has completed the build of a brand new 1500m2 facility in Grangemouth, Scotland. The Grangemouth plant, which opened in June 2009, is the first CHEP plant in Scotland operated by UPL with capacity for processing 4.3 million pallets per year. Exmac Automation was the principle contractor appointed for the entire project, from design and build, procurement of all new equipment, to installation and commissioning. Commenting for CHEP, Technical Systems Manager Nick Fisher says: “This is the first time we have awarded a turnkey construction design management contract to an equipment supplier for a new plant. Having Exmac manage all aspects of the project, including all the different contractors, the equipment being installed, controls, and site safety, has worked well for us.” The specification for the plant required Exmac’s design and manufacture to be sufficiently robust to withstand the combination of a harsh environment and the high-volume throughput. Nick Fisher confirms that this has been achieved. “The build quality of the equipment supplied by Exmac is impressive.” He is also complimentary about Exmac’s engineering and design capabilities, saying that the engineering department had proposed some innovative solutions to what have been traditional pallet handling problems. “We are pleased with the outcome,” he says, “some of the machines Exmac has installed are very different to what we are used to; and have proven to work well during the first six months of throughput” As a global supplier with over 40 years experience of supplying standard and bespoke conveyor systems and equipment for many different products and industries, Excel Automation is first choice for all discerning companies and organisations looking for practice, high quality and cost-effective automated materials handling requirements.
